SHOWTIME® Inspired City Guide by Sheraton: Albuquerque

Let us guide you to get in touch with the spirit of the American Southwest.

If your adventurous spirit doesn’t scare easily, then let it be drawn to Albuquerque. Located in New Mexico’s high desert, this modern city thrives against an historic backstory written by the Native Americans and the Spanish.

The spirit and stories of Albuquerque aren’t unlike the suspense that draws you into the SHOWTIME® Original Series Penny Dreadful. There’s a lot at play in the shadows of this haunting, sometimes disturbing series. It’s easy for it to grab hold of the deepest corners of your imagination, just as the landscape here is wont to do.

They say the series can take you to an extraordinary place where incomparable beauty and unspeakable evil coexist; for some, the same could be said about the American Southwest.

Let us be your guide to a weekend getaway full of intrigue inspired by Penny Dreadful. Then settle in and regroup at the one of two Sheraton Albuquerque locations where you can catch new episodes Sundays at 10pm ET.

Start with a living history lesson by visiting a Native American tribe or pueblo where you can see centuries-old traditions still being practiced today. Regular tours welcome visitors into these revered tribal lands.

The Rio Grande valley is still marked by the cliff dwellings, pit houses, kivas (underground ceremonial chambers), and symbols etched in the desert rocks by the Native American tribes who occupied these lands. Visit the Coronado Historic Site and Kuaua Pueblo to see some of this for yourself, including a reconstructed kiva and the finest Pre-Columbian murals ever found.

At Petroglyph National Monument there are more than 20,000 images etched into the black stone; a beautiful way to connect with the spirits of the people who left them centuries ago. Here hawks fly above the mesa and roadrunners zip by in the expansive, lush and haunting landscape that sets the backdrop for Penny Dreadful’s third season.

Really experience the New Mexican desert closer than you thought possible with a trail ride via Acacia Riding Adventures. Ride horseback to explore the desert’s rugged terrain, canyons, sand dunes, and the shallow Rio Grande waters.

Be sure to sneak in for dinner at Vernon’s Speakeasy. Hidden behind large black wooden doors, the entrance is illuminated by a single red light when they’re open for business. The best kept secret in Albuquerque is known for their prime rib, filet mignon, scallops, and artisan cocktails.
