Falling for Canada

A Canadian fall exemplifies all the bests of the season: crisp outdoor air, warm colors, rich food, and sweet drinks. We have designed a “to-do list” of the best activities to help plan your fall adventure.

Autumn and Fall in Canada

Fly Fishing in Canada

SEE: Changing Leaves

Canada’s foliage is the highlight of the fall season. The best way to see the colors is at one of the many national parks. Based off last year’s foliage reports, we recommend:

For more information on the best leaf-peeping spots, check out Ontario Parks Fall Colour website or download Leaf Peeper, a foliage tracking app.

Ice Hockey in Canada

Hockey is always top of mind in Canada.  From September 17- October 1, eight teams from across North America and Europe - will compete in an elite international hockey championship in the beautiful city of Toronto. This fast-paced tournament is one you won’t want to miss. If you need even more hockey after the winner is crowned, the regular season will commence on Wednesday, October 7.

Halloween in OttawaCredit: Ottawa Tourism

CELEBRATE: Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, Canada is ready to spook you. Try one of many haunted walking tours such as Montreal Ghosts, Lost Souls of Gastown in Vancouver or Ghost and Gallows in Ottawa – filled with spooky insider ghost stories. If these tours sound like child’s play, test your bravery at Nightmares Fear Factory in Niagara Falls Canada.  Over 130,000 participates have been too frightened to continue during the 17 minute pitch-black tour and were forced to shamefully add their names to the public "Chicken List."

autumn Apple Picking in Canada
EAT: Apples

Food tastes better when you pick it yourself. Pick and sample your own delicious local fruit at Applewood Farms in Halifax or Frootogo Orchards in Hamilton. Or, enjoy many restaurants across Canada who customize their autumn menu. In downtown Montreal, explore Etre Avec Toi (e.a.t.), the trendy eatery that plates unexpected yet exquisite dishes, such as a lobster roll with julienned apples. Craving something more traditional? Indulge in gaZette Montreal’s bread pudding with chocolate, caramelized apple, and Bailey’s English cream.

Travel Tip: When traveling, use SPG Cravings: our favorite food curation website. SPG Cravings has meticulously gathered the best restaurants, bars, and food experiences from both around the globe, and around the corner.

 Merridale Cider in B.C.
DRINK: Beer and Cider

Along with fresh picked apples come sweet, crisp ciders. Reward yourself with a well-earned cider at Merridale Cider in B.C. or one of three cider distilleries at Apple Pie Trail in Ontario. If you are more of a beer person, you are in luck. Every year thousands flock Kitchener-Waterloo for Oktoberfest, a good time for all. This festival consists of over 17 fest halls and 40 family and cultural events.

Travel Tip: The Westin Trillium House, Blue Mountain offers VIP specials for the Apple Pie Trail.

Tigers at Toronto Zoo
VISIT: Zoos and Farms

The fall is the ideal time for a trip to the zoo. Not only is the weather a little cooler, but zoos are also a little less crowded when school is in session. Many zoos host signature events for all ages to attract more visitors during this time: The Toronto Zoo hosts charity runs and VIP Panda birthday parties, while at the Montreal Zoo you can have “Breakfast with the Bears.” Oh My!

Travel Tip: Stay at The Westin Prince, Toronto with their special package including tickets to the Toronto Zoo. Traveling to Calgary? Sheraton Cavalier Calgary offers the ultimate zoo adventure with a special package that includes 4 passes to the Calgary Zoo and more.

Farms are another must-visit attraction, but these farms aren’t just for growing delicious produce. These over-the-top farms feature all types of activities for the whole family. Try Saunders Farm, located outside Ottawa, known for its impressive play structure and puppet shows or Hanes Corn Farm, located outside Hamilton, renowned for its artistic yet laborious corn mazes.

From BC to Newfoundland, you need to experience it for yourself –and soon – before Canada becomes “The Great White North.”
